Using an ROV (remotely operated vehicle), NOAA researchers were exploring a small seamount in the Gulf of Alaska in late August when they spotted this mysterious golden orb. It was about 10 centimeters (4 inches) in diameter and had a hole or tear in the side of it. The researchers speculated that it could be sponge remnants or coral or even an egg casing of some kind. Using the suction tool on the ROV, NOAA collected the golden specimen for further testing to hopefully reveal its identity. So f
