Cheetah anatomy is a perfect example of evolution fine-tuning for one very specific skill: the chase. In addition to their lightweight frame, semi-retractable claws, and rudder-like tail are even more adaptations for speed. Their flexible spine acts like a spring, allowing the cheetah to stretch its body with each stride — covering up to 25 feet (7.6 meters) in a single bound. Cheetahs also have an oversized heart, lungs, and nostrils to deliver oxygen efficiently during intense bursts of speed.
