Just 2 PAINTS This sky was painted with only two PAINTS. Glacier Blue and Perelyne Violet. That’s it. No secret third mix hiding somewhere off camera. When you lean Glacier Blue a little heavier, the sky breathes cooler and lighter. When you let Perelyne Violet take the lead, it deepens and shifts into something moodier. Just two PAINTS. Completely different feelings. That’s the power of understanding your mixes instead of chasing more tubes. As a watercolor artist, I’ve learned the challenge is

Values are just how light or dark something is. They’re the structure underneath every painting. If your values are strong, your art reads clearly even without color. 4 steps to use values better: 1. Squint at your reference. It helps you see the big light and dark shapes instead of the tiny details. 2. Pick your three value zones. Light, mid, dark. Keep things simple and don’t let them drift too close together. 3. Group your shadows. Shadows look stronger when they stay connected instead of bro

Bold, loose shadows do more for your painting than extra details ever will. When you stop tiptoeing around your darks, your art instantly feels deeper, richer, and more alive. Loose shadows let the viewer’s eye breathe. Bold shadows give your shapes weight. Put them together and suddenly your painting has dimension instead of outlines. You don’t need perfect edges. You don’t need a tiny brush. You just need the courage to go darker… and to let the paint move. Let the shadow spill. Let it soften.

Johnny Thomas Art on Instagram: "Painting glass in watercolor looks complicated, but it’s really just light, shadow, and a few well placed reflections. You don’t paint the glass. You paint what it reflects. Keep your highlights untouched and let the watercolor do the glow. Want to learn how to make your glass actually look like glass? Comment 🍷and I’ll make a full tutorial. #watercolor #painting #glasspainting"

Your brush is not supposed to tiptoe. It is supposed to dance. Some of you are out here treating your watercolor brush like it is stepping on hot coals. Tap tap tap. Terrified to commit. Meanwhile the water is on the page saying please just move. When you paint wet in wet the whole point is motion. Glide. Flow. A little wiggle. A little drama. You are not placing pigment. You are choreographing chaos. Here are a few reminders before you audition your brush for Dancing With the Arts. 1. Loosen yo

Why I reveal my entire art process 🎨 I show everything. The rough sketch. The awkward middle stage. The overworked areas. The fixes. And yes… the fails. I do it for trust. Art online can look effortless. One perfect clip. One polished final photo. But that’s not reality. Every piece goes through a messy phase. Doubt shows up. Things look wrong before they look right. I want artists to see the truth. Most artwork looks questionable before it looks good. Most progress feels slower than you expect

Tips for blending skies ☁️A lot of people say watercolor is not forgiving. I beg to differ..While your wash is still damp, you can go back into your clouds with a clean, damp brush to blend. Softer brushes tend to give you a type of wisp that is very pleasing to the eye (at least mine own). .It goes both ways. You either create lighter pieces coming off of the cloud or blend pigment back into it for shadows. .You’re going to want to make sure you are not going back in with a fully wet brush as i

Depth isn’t detail. It’s values. 👀 You can paint every leaf perfectly and it’ll still look flat if your values are off. Here are 3 simple tips to create real depth in your landscapes 👇 🌫️ 1. Lighten as you go back The farther something is, the lighter it gets. More water. Less pigment. Softer edges. Let the atmosphere do the work. 🌳 2. Darkest darks live up front Your foreground is where contrast belongs. Strong lights against rich darks pull the viewer in. Don’t waste your punch on the back

About halfway through this piece I hit that familiar wall. Colors felt wrong. The paper felt ruined. The “why did I even start this?” moment showed up right on time. That mid-painting crisis is almost a requirement at this point. It’s the part where nothing looks like the idea in your head and quitting feels productive. I didn’t quit. I slowed down instead, and somewhere in that mess the painting found its footing. A few things that helped me push through it 1 Step back. Literally. Put the brush

Paint travel. 🌄.One thing I thoroughly enjoy about painting is the fantasy. Pigments and brushes allow me to escape to places I might never see. Things I may never touch or smell. It’s like a good book but YOU are the creator..If I want to see mountains today, I can see mountains. If I don’t want birds near, I can leave them out..Do you leave the birds out? 🕊️.@rockwell_canada 🎨@baohongcanada 📜@escoda_brushes 🖌️.#art #travel #watercolor #fantasy #moutainpainting #landscapes | Johnny Thomas A

Since this is a trial reel, chances are you don’t follow me yet. So here’s the quick rundown. I’m Johnny Thomas, a watercolor artist who fell in love with the challenge of the medium. I make loose skies, glass studies, gouache night scenes, and all the in-between moments that keep us coming back to the brush. My goal is simple: create art that feels honest, teach what I’ve learned the hard way, and build a space where artists of all levels feel seen, encouraged, and pushed to grow. If you make a

There is something freeing about knowing the basics well. It gives you this quiet confidence that lets you wander into new ideas without feeling like you are about to fall on your face. Even the wild experiments feel a little safer when you know you can always lean on the skills you’ve already built. Your strokes get looser. Your choices get braver. Your curiosity gets louder. And suddenly exploring a new style or technique feels fun instead of intimidating. You are not guessing anymore. You are

Being an artist means walking your own path. It’s easy to get pulled into trends, styles, or “rules” everyone else is following, but your growth comes from choosing what actually fuels you. Take in the positive, learn from those who inspire you, and leave behind what drains you. Build your practice, your voice, and your art in a way that feels honest. The magic happens when you stay curious, intentional, and unapologetically yourself. 📍Follow if you’re making your own way. #artoftheday #artinsp

I know people love to say “there’s no rules in art”… but every time I hear it, I flinch a little. Most of the folks yelling it the loudest are just too lazy to learn composition or color theory in the first place. And hey, that’s just my opinion…take it or leave it. But here’s what I do believe: learning the rules doesn’t limit you. It frees you. Once you understand why something works, you can break it with intention. You can bend it, twist it, flip it upside down, and make magic on your own te

Ego hates beginner work. Masters were beginners who didn’t listen. Your ego wants your paintings to look impressive right away. It wants clean edges, perfect color mixes, and compliments in the comments. But growth does not care about your image. Growth cares about reps. Beginner work is not embarrassing. It is required. The messy washes. The muddy colors. The awkward compositions. That is the tuition. If you can learn to let your ego be uncomfortable, your skill will skyrocket. If you keep prot

Drop a comment if you are choosing progress today and tell me what you are working on. If you think your art sucks just wait until you stop chasing perfect and start chasing progress. Perfect is a moving target and it keeps you stuck in your head. Progress is honest and it shows up every time you pick up a brush even on the days when the painting feels off. Every artist you admire has piles of work they never show and most of it looked rough long before it looked good. The only difference is tha

I don’t care how many views this gets. I don’t have time for nonsense. I’m here to create and connect with real ones who feel something when they see the work. Not everyone is going to like what you do and that’s fine. You’re not everyone’s cup of tea. Honestly tea is gross anyway and coffee is superior. ☕️ I’m not here to perform for people waiting on a mistake so they can take advantage of it. I’m me. Always will be. I’d rather build something real with a few solid people than water myself dow

Nobody talks about how much you sacrifice chasing progress You give up sleep. You give up slow mornings. You give up rest you know you need because there’s this voice in your head saying “just keep going you’re almost there.” Artists don’t just sacrifice time. We sacrifice comfort. We sacrifice energy. We sacrifice nights when our bodies are begging us to stop but our brains are locked onto an idea we can’t let go of. And the truth is Progress does cost something. Sometimes it’s hours of sleep y

My personal tips for success 1. Be yourself. For real. The right people will connect with what is honest, not what is polished. 2. Do not sell out your style, your voice, or your values just to grow faster. Fast growth means nothing if it is not you. 3. Outwork your excuses. Talent is cool. Consistency wins. 4. Let one win fuel the next dream. Do not retire your vision just because something worked. Build on it. That has been the formula for me. Stay real. Keep dreaming. Then go put in the work.

Johnny Thomas Art on Instagram: "Wrapping up CreativeWorld and this wild beautiful journey through Germany and I’m sitting here feeling full in every way possible. The art the conversations the laughter the bread the miles walked all of it reminded me how far curiosity and kindness can take you. At the end of the day I’m still just some random Cajun boy who loves to paint and somehow gets to stand in rooms like this because of the support of an unreal community. None of this happens alone and I

I could play the game, post the perfect angles, hype every little thing, and sell you dreams wrapped in filters. But that is never been me. I have always chosen raw honesty over polished performance. No fake hype. No manufactured persona. Just real talk, real process, real results and real failures when they happen. I tell you what actually works, what does not, and what I am struggling with right now. If something sucks, I will say it. If I am excited about a new technique or tool, it is becaus
